A Rural Creche Initiative is a community-based childcare programme that provides a safe and nurturing environment for young children while supporting their nutrition, health, early development and overall wellbeing. Chotanagpur Kalyan Niketan(CKN) Rural Creche Initiative focuses on children aged 7 months to 3 years in rural and tribal communities of Simdega, Jharkhand.

A Shishu Ghar is a community-based creche or childcare centre for young children. It provides a safe space where children can receive care, nutritious food, early stimulation, opportunities for play and developmental support.

The Chotanagpur Kalyan Niketan(CKN) Creche Initiative primarily supports children between 7 months and 3 years of age. The initiative also benefits mothers, caregivers and families by providing accessible childcare support within the community.

CKN’s Rural Creche Initiative is being implemented by Chotanagpur Kalyan Niketan (CKN) in rural and tribal communities of Simdega district in Jharkhand.

CKN currently operates 20 operational community-based creches or Shishu Ghars.

CKN’s Rural Creche Initiative is implemented in Simdega Block of Simdega District, Jharkhand.

The Rural Creche Initiative currently covers 14 villages across 7 Panchayats in Simdega Block.

A Shishu Ghar provides community-based childcare, nutrition support, safe spaces for play and rest, early childhood stimulation, growth monitoring and linkages with relevant health and nutrition services.

The period from infancy to early childhood is critical for physical growth, nutrition, brain development and emotional wellbeing. A quality creche can provide regular care, nutritious food, early stimulation and a safe environment during this important stage of life.

Community-based childcare can reduce the childcare burden on mothers and caregivers during working hours. This can help mothers participate more consistently in agriculture, wage labour, livelihoods and other economic activities.

The Creche Initiative focuses on creating clean, child-friendly spaces with trained caregivers, appropriate supervision, safe sleeping and play areas, hygiene practices and community involvement in the functioning of the centre.

Establishing a Shishu Ghar requires community engagement, identification of a suitable and safe space, trained caregivers, systems for nutrition and childcare, and coordination with local health and nutrition services. Chotanagpur Kalyan Niketan(CKN) works with communities to strengthen local ownership of childcare and early childhood development.

A creche is primarily designed to provide regular childcare and supervision for young children, particularly while parents or caregivers are engaged in work. An Anganwadi is part of India’s Integrated Child Development Services system and provides a range of nutrition, health and early childhood development services. Local services and age coverage may vary, and community-based creches can complement existing child and nutrition services.

The programme tracks indicators related to children’s growth and nutritional status, including underweight, wasting, stunting and growth faltering, to support appropriate follow-up and care.

As of September 2026, 370 children are currently enrolled across CKN’s 20 operational creches.

CSR partners, donors, foundations and institutions can partner with CKN to support rural childcare, child nutrition, early childhood development, caregiver capacity building and the expansion of community-based Shishu Ghars.
